The Split Rock

A 60+ foot tall monolith split right down the middle with water washed areas at its base stands as a sentinel in the desert and is believed by local tradition and visitors to be the site the rock Moses struck and waters flowed out.  “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the Rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the Rock, and there shall come water out of it that the people may drink”. Ex 17: 6

Of all the remarkable things that remain so well preserved in the northwest desert of Arabia, this is perhaps the most startling and impressive of them all. We discovered this rock on April 2nd, 1992 for the first time, while actually on a completely different mission. This rock still stands as a testament to what happened there so long ago, and is clearly described by the Bedouin who have lived in this area for generations as the rock Moses struck and the waters flowed out. Powerful enough a witness to prompt us to name our organization after it.
